The ZZ Plant is a very hardy, adaptable houseplant that can tolerate basically any lighting situation from low light to bright, indirect light. Its upright, glossy leaves give it a unique and tropical look.
Background
Zamioculcas zamiifolia, better known as the ‘ZZ Plant’, is the sole member of the Zamioculcas genus of plants. It is native to tropical Africa and is cultivated as a houseplant to its hardiness and drought-tolerance. Also goes by the name ‘Zanzibar Gem’.
Size
Usually grows to an indoor height of about 3′ tall, and about the same width. Grows slowly indoors. Can grow a bit faster in brighter light.
Growing Conditions
Light
ZZ Plants can survive in basically any light situation, as long as they are getting at least some light. If you want a plant in your office that only receives artificial light, this might be the plant for you!
If you want the optimal light situation for your ZZ Plant however, go for bright, indirect light, with no direct sunlight. As noted above, this will certainly help your plant to grow faster if that’s what you are wanting.
Watering
Definitely on the lower end of the houseplant spectrum for watering maintenance and frequency. Let the potting media dry out between waterings. ZZ Plants are drought-tolerant so if you forget to water it for awhile, it will likely still survive. It has rhizomatous roots that allow it to store water.
Potting Mix
Any well-draining potting mix is fine. Emphasis on well-draining, as this plant does not like to be overly moist.
Humidity
Does not require high humidity, but also does not like very dry air.
Fertilizer
Fertilize only once or twice a year during the growing season.
Propagation
Through division or through leaf cuttings.
Toxicity
Mild to moderately toxic. All parts of the plant are toxic.
Potential Problems
Root rot. Although ZZ Plants are extremely hardy and tolerant of neglect, the main potential problem that can lead to plant decline would be root rot. This is not a plant that you want to leave in potting media that is too moist, and never ever let a ZZ Plant sit in any standing water.
